Greenwood Elementary Students Celebrate ‘Numeracy November’ With Math Mashup

BESSEMER, Ala. — Students at Greenwood Elementary transformed mathematical concepts into wearable art as part of their "Numeracy November" celebration.

The monthlong initiative aims to foster excitement around mathematics through interactive activities, pattern recognition and geometric exploration. During the week's "Wacky Tacky Math Mashup," students and staff were encouraged to "dress to impress" by incorporating geometry shapes into their outfits.

Throughout the week, scholars have been busy counting numbers, identifying complex sequences and utilizing "shape powers" to solve problems in the classroom. The school’s hallways were filled with creative displays of circles, triangles and polygons as students demonstrated their understanding of geometric principles through fashion.

“Numeracy November has us all counting numbers, looking at sequences, and using shape powers to have fun with our work,” school officials said.

The celebration is scheduled to continue through the end of the week with themed days focused on visual mathematics. Students are encouraged to wear patterns on Thursday and conclude the festivities on Friday by dressing as "Math Superheroes" to showcase their favorite mathematical patterns.

By blending creativity with core curriculum standards, Greenwood Elementary aims to build student confidence in numeracy and show that mathematics can be both engaging and fun.
